68 Centre Youth Club - healthy lifestyles

The 68 Centre Youth Club was one of the clubs from around the country that were involved in piloting the Make Space for Health resource materials – the EAT, MOVE and FEEL packs. Young people and staff gave their views in testing and evaluating the resources, which fed into developing the final versions of the innovative, fun and easy to use packs.

The three resources each focus on a particular aspect of health (nutritional health, physical activity, emotional and personal health), and are packed full of handy tips, useful information and fun activities to encourage young people to lead healthier lifestyles. The 68 Centre team responded to this challenge and put together a Healthy Lifestyles project, based on the wide range of topics and activity sessions in the Make Space for Health packs, which they could do with a targeted group of young people during the summer and Easter school holidays. Fourteen young people aged 11 and 12 participated in the project, which also supported their transition from primary to secondary school.

With financial support from York Young People’s Service, the 68 Centre team were able to provide a fantastic programme offering young people an opportunity to enjoy many healthy eating sessions; learn more about how their bodies work; build and understanding their fitness levels; and much, much more! Sessions included: Skip to be fit, Shopping for lunch, Make your own healthy dessert, Endurance test, How exercise helps your body, Importance of breakfast, Fruit busting smoothies, Eating for exams, Heart fitness challenge, Dangers of drugs.

The young people especially enjoyed using a heart rate monitor to ascertain both their ‘resting’ heart rate and their heart rate after exercise. The 68 Centre is looking forward to building on its Healthy Lifestyles project and inviting many more young people to take part.
